This video from TEDxEast Hampton features Joel Hoffman discussing why the three most used methods for translating the Bible are the worst methods for that purpose.
He also has an article on The Huffington Post which covers some of the same material: Five Ways Your Bible Translation Distorts the Original Meaning of the Text
This comes on the heels of the highly publicized publication of some new Bible translations:
- New International Version (2011 revision)
- Common English Bible
- English Standard Version
- New American Bible Revised Edition
I have checked out the NIV (2011), CEB, and ESV. While they have made strides in readability, each in their own way, I have reservations about recommending them for deeper study over my preferred New Revised Standard Version.
If you have experience using one or more of these newer translations in your study, I’d love to hear your comments on them.
